Rural. Stoneheap was a unique development of a redundant
farm property of circa 200 acres redeveloped to provide eleven country
'homestead' properties.
The 'lowland crofting' scheme was piloted by West Lothian Council to allow
the rehabilitation of farms and farmland which were proved uneconomic as
single agricultural units because of the poor quality of the land being
farmed or the small acreage of the units. The rehabilitation allowed the
sub-division into smaller developer 'crofting units' in return for a scheme
of appropriate woodland planting, wildlife habitat protection and natural
resource management allied to increased public access to the countryside. |

| The client required the development of house types which reflected a
'modern traditional' designed to reflect the rural setting of Stoneheap. The
design emphasis set by client brief required the houses to fully reflect the
needs and aspirations of modern family living, incorporate the facility for
potential 'home/office working' and emphasise/reflect the vernacular
detailing of modest agricultural cottages and rural buildings. Three
typical house types were developed which could be individually tailored to
the end-users personal requirements. It was envisaged the house types
developed would form the basis of a complete range available for rural
developments. |
