The property was purchased as a small inn and the client wished to
develop the potential of the site and location to provide a multi functional
tourist facility. It was important to the client that during any
refurbishment and extension programme the existing facilities remained
operational The method adopted involved the erection of an enclosing steel
framework to enclose the existing building and provide the framework to
allow the development of an upper floor of accommodation. The additional
accommodation incorporated a cocktail bar, a la carte restaurant, small
function suite, 8 letting bedrooms and a resident manager's flat.
The 30 bedroom hillwalkers hostel was developed to provide a stopover
facility for the thousands of people who endeavour to conquer the arduous
hike over The West Highland Way.
The building was designed as a simple dormitory type facility which
allowed the occupants to self cater or take advantage of the available
on-site catering facilities.
The design was arranged in four bed 'bunkhouse' wings extending from a
central core facility. The building was constructed from and finished
externally in home grown timber to 'melt' into the wooden backdrop. |
